Who accredits TEFL/TESOL worldwide: NO ONE

Unfortunately there is no Independent Board of Accreditation for TESL/TEFL Certificates and Diplomas.

This means that each institute, school, or organization recognizes their own Certificate and accreditation comes from good practice, professional standards and reputation.

So why do a TEFL at all when none of them are international accredited?

Although there is no International Independent Board of Accreditation, this does not mean that the TEFL is not accredited at all and that the training comes without any standard at all. As an example the certTEFL by Trinity college and the CELTA by Cambridge University are recognized by the British council and of course the Peace Corps TEFL manual is accredited by the U.S government as a part of the Peace Corps training program. But most important; the schools need to have some level of professional teacher training for incoming teachers in order to maintain a high level of teaching standards. Therefore, as a potential teacher you need to be trained and prepared for the task of teaching in Asia or anywhere else in the world that you desire.

What's the pay?
Various schools pay varying salaries depending on your qualifications and location of the school. A Thai school teacher starting salary is around 7,000 THB/month and the head of English around 20,000 after years of service. Last year our office placed teachers within the range of:
Native English speaker holding a Bachelors and a TEFL
Bangkok 30,000-69,000 (most of the teachers started just below the 36-40,000)
Outside Bangkok 30,000-42,000 (most teachers started at 35,000)
Native English speaker without a Bachelors degree but with a TEFL
Bangkok 30,000-40,000 (most of the teacher started just below the 31-35,000)
Outside Bangkok 30,000-42,000 (most teachers started at 33,000)
Asian and African English teachers holding a required Bachelors degree and a TEFL
Bangkok 20,000-33,000 (most of the teachers started around 22-28,000)
Outside Bangkok 15s000-30s000 (most teachers started at 25.000)
Note from admin: Due to the tight job market for Asian teachers, especially Filipinos and Africans, the Thai school’s willingness to pay a decent salary is low. The Nonthaburi Teaching Project with over 200 Asian/African teachers DOES pay 30,000/m, but there are in general only a few positions that do, unfortunately.
Furthermore, if your English accent OR formal credentials are not that good, you might consider not coming here at all. It is a tough job market for you guys.
Other nationalities such as Europeans, Middle Easterners, and South American English teachers usually are considered as westerners but non-native speakers should expect a salary slightly less than a native English speaker.
If your contract is paid by the hours taught your remuneration is usually 300-500 THB/hr up to 800 THB/hr for corporate work.

Do I have to do a TEFL to apply for a job or
do I have to apply trough JP if I want to do a TEFL?

Not at all !!-To apply for a job or to apply to do a TEFL are two separate things. But of course if you choose to do a TEFL Training Course with us we will have a greater knowledge of your skills in order to advise you regarding placement opportunities.
